Helloooo lovely listeners!

Hopefully you've heard our PSAs announcing the North Coast Music Festival for this upcoming Labor Day weekend. No you say? What is North Coast Music Festival? Ahhh let me drop some science: NCMF the FIRST of it's type... Chicago welcomes jam bands, electro geniuses, dub step gods, reggae renegades and hip hoppers alike. This weekend, Sept 3-5 in Union Park you can witness the kick off to a festival that's sure to continue year after year. There's a great line up including Pretty Lights, Nas and Damien Marley, Umphrey's McGee, the Disco Biscuits, Green Velvet, Flying Lotus, The Chemical Brothers.... the list literally goes on and on. And! There's a local stage where you can see Chicago's finest DJs, artists, and performers. North Coast actually ran a promotion where they allowed people to submit their music, have it rated by the public, and then underwent auditions. Great way to spread the local talent! Rock on NCMF. Belatedly Yours, My Top 10 of 2009

Hey fellow dj's and WLUW listeners,

I've had the nagging feeling of some unfinished business since the new year began and I think it's because I haven't yet posted my top records of 2009. I misplaced the little notepad which had my list and I was going to blow off the annual ritual, but I found it hiding in a coat pocket recently so, better late than never, here's a few of my favorite musical things from 2009. Not only did I like the sound of these records, I liked the band names and the album titles--short and sweet, mostly. I hope this will kickstart a few more belated Best of 2009 postings from WLUW dj's. In no particular order:

WLUW's Winter Freeform Programming starts now

This winter break, WLUW is dancing to the beat of a different drummer: freeform programming.

With the large majority of our DJ staff gone for the holidays, the folks who have stuck around are going keep the studio warm by spinning their personal favorite tunes and experimenting with program ideas. It's an exciting time to listen to WLUW (even more so than usual)...there's no telling what you'll hear when you tune in!

Due to this scheduling change, our popular syndicated program Democracy Now! will not be airing at its usual time of 9am Mon-Fri. This change is only temporary. DN! will return on Monday, January, 18th, 2010. A full listing of other area station broadcasting Democracy Now! can be found on their website.

Our local community programs, such as the eclectic mix of programs you hear on the weekends, will remain the same this winter.

WLUW gets noticed in Youngstown, Ohio

Gospel singer Emmitt Nevels Jr., a Youngstown native, has released his debut CD, “Love You I.”

Nevels is an accomplished songwriter who has penned many songs for his famous siblings, the Nevels Sisters gospel quartet.

His new album has caught the ear of gospel-radio programmers in several markets, who have added Nevels’ music to their rotation.

The up-tempo praise single “I Wanna Bless You” is getting airplay in Atlanta, Detroit, St. Louis, Buffalo and Jacksonville, Fla. The jazz-styled tracks “Eternity” and “It’s A Good Day” may soon find their way on the playlists of smooth inspirational jazz shows.

Bob Marovich of WLUW in Chicago, a gospel music historian, describes “Love You I” (7-Places Global Gospel) as “a simple melodic love song to the Savior. It’s fresh, modern, crisp and electric, a blend of Christian pop and contemporary gospel.”

“I just write from my heart,” said Nevels who penned every song on his freshman album except “You Are Great” (Ishmael Hale).

Nevels’ songwriting credits also include “Company,” “Alright” and the Billboard Top 30 single “Clap Your Hands,” all of which have been recorded by the Nevels Sisters.

Nevels shares executive producing credits for “Love You I” with Dr. Clyde Maxwell. Nevels and Maxwell are co-owners of 7-Places record label.

Nevels lives in Canfield with his wife, Kacie, and their two daughters. He and his wife are the owners of Coney Island hot dog shop at 3640 Belmont Ave. in Liberty.

Nevels performed in August at the DeYor Performing Arts Centre in Youngstown, but said no additional shows are scheduled in the area.

“I probably will not be doing anything here until next year, as far as singing,” said Nevels. “I am currently promoting the CD in different states and cities.”

Nevels previously sang lead for local group G-Clef. In the ’90s, he was asked to join the Grammy-award-winning gospel group Commissioned, when Fred Hammond left the band.

“When I was approached by Mitchell Jones of Commissioned, I was floored at this great opportunity,” said Nevels. “I was in school and working heavily with my church, so I did not take the offer.”
